What You Need to Know

You must know your audience and your material.

There are four learning styles and it's imperative that you include as many as you can into your speech. That's if you want to become an effective public speaker.

  • Visual Learner: This person retains information through their eyes. This style of learning means the person enjoys when speakers incorporate videos clips or pictures into their presentations. Powerpoint's are beneficial to reaching this audience member.
  • Auditory Learner: This person simply likes to soak in information by listening. You may find them sitting with their arms crossed but trust me, they're engaged. They learn by listening. Keep in mind, over stimulation of visual aspects may bored them because they just want to sit and hear information.
  • Verbal/Writing Learner: This learner enjoys when there's Q&A. You may find them always taking notes.
  • Kinesthetic Learner: Majority of people fall into this category. They truly need all of the above to retain information. This style of learner wants to receive the information and regurgitate it back. I find it beneficial to include short activities or small engagement opportunities for this type of learning style.

There are 7 different types of learning styles, however these 4 typically include the majority of people. Stay away from strictly talking behind a podium for a full hour (boring). If it's not entertaining people will check out. How can you effectively deliver information in a way that will include as many learning styles as possible?
